Petrokefalo gehört zur Gemeinde Heraklion. Es befindet sich bei Kilometer 16 der Straße nach Agios Myronas auf einer Höhe von 340 Metern.
Der Name des Dorfes (Petrokefalo = Steinkopf) ist auf die Besonderheit der Form des Hügels, auf dem es gebaut wurde (in Form eines menschlichen Kopfes), zurückzuführen. Eine andere Geschichte besagt, dass das Dorf nach seinem ersten Siedler Petros, dem Besitzer des Hügels, benannt wurde.
Charakteristisch für die Siedlung sind die eindeutigen Merkmale des Festungstyps. Bei Ausgrabungen, die in den 70er Jahren durchgeführt wurden, fand man interessante Relikte aus der Vergangenheit.

Petrokefalo belongs to the Municipality of Heraklion. It is located at the 16th kilometer of the road to Agios Myronas at an altitude of 340 meters.
The peculiarity of the shape of the hill on which it is built (in the form of a human head) is considered to have given the name of the village, or otherwise, the settlement was named after its first settler, Petros, the owner of the hill.
Characteristic of the settlement are the clear features of the fortress (fortress) type. Excavations of the 70’s that were carried out in the area included: a carved tomb with a bathtub, a sarcophagus and burial pithos.
