Das Dorf Marathokefala liegt 25 km von der Stadt Chania und nur 3 km von Kolymbari entfernt. Das Highlight des Dorfes ist die historische Höhle des Heiligen Johannes des Einsiedlers mit dem Tempel aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Neben der Höhle befindet sich eine Krypta sowie ein Felsen mit einem Riss, aus dem Wasser „das Heilige Wasser des Heiligen“ tropft. Das weitere Gebiet hat sich in den letzten Jahren stark entwickelt, da es immer mehr als Ort für den Bau schöner Luxusimmobilien gewählt wird. Am wichtigsten ist, dass das Dorf näher an der Westseite Kretas liegt, wo sich die Strände von Phalasarna und Elafonisi – zwei der besten Strände Europas – befinden.

The village of Marathokefala is 25 km from the city of Chania and only 3 km from Kolymbari. The highlight of the village is the historic cave of St. John the Hermit with the temple from the 15th century. Next to the cave there is a crypt and a rock with a crack from which water „the holy water of the saint“ drips. The wider area has developed significantly in recent years as it is increasingly chosen as a location for building beautiful luxury properties. Most importantly, the village is closer to the west side of Crete, where the beaches of Phalasarna and Elafonisi – two of the best beaches in Europe – are.
