Das Dorf Kounavi liegt in einem Tal, 340 m über dem Meeresspiegel und ist 15 km von Heraklion entfernt. Das Dorf hat ca. 850 Einwohner, die Hauptbeschäftigung ist Olivenanbau und Weinbau. The cultivation of the vineyards in the area of ​​Kounavi dates back to the 13th century. The built folk – wine-presses – that are preserved in the Kounavi and are dated according to their architectural form and the ceramic finds in the 15th-16th c. provide their own testimony to the history of wine in the region. The mountainous area where the village is located maintains the traditions of the area unchanged and the locals are famous for their hospitality and authenticity.
