Georgioupoli ist ein Ort an der westlichen Nordküste von Kreta im Regionalbezirk Chania, etwa 22 km von Rethymno, 35 km von Chania und 100 km von Iraklio entfernt. Georgioupoli wurde 1893 als Almiropolis gegründet und 1899 zu Ehren des damaligen Hochkommissars von Kreta Georg von Griechenland in Georgioupolis umbenannt. Um die ursprüngliche Moorlandschaft zu entwässern, wurden Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts zahlreiche Eukalyptusbäume gepflanzt. Eine eindrucksvolle Allee von Eukalyptusbäumen empfängt daher heute den Besucher und prägt das Ortsbild. Der Ort liegt in der Rundung einer Bucht vor einer westlich vorspringenden Halbinsel in einer mit Eukalyptusbäumen gesäumten Flussniederung. Der Strand von Georgioupoli besteht größtenteils aus feinem Sand, erstreckt sich über 10 km gen Osten. Etwa fünf Kilometer landeinwärts befindet sich der einzige natürliche Süßwassersee auf Kreta, der Kournas-See. Man erreicht von Georgioupoli aus schnell die zwei größeren Städte Chania und Rethymno. Auch Vamos und Kalives sind von dem kleinen Ort nicht weit entfernt. Der Ort hat einen kleinen Fischerhafen, der von dem etwa einen Kilometer kurzen Fluss Almiros (dt. ‚der Salzige‘) gespeist wird. Im Wasser des Flusses sind unter anderem Wasserschildkröten heimisch. Georgioupoli ist stark durch den Pauschaltourismus geprägt. Sowohl im Ortsgebiet als auch östlich davon entstanden zahlreiche Hotelanlagen sowie eine vom Tourismus abhängige Infrastruktur mit Läden, Gastronomiebetrieben, Immobilienbüros und Autoverleihfirmen.

Georgioupoli is a place on the western north coast of Crete in the regional district of Chania, about 22 km from Rethymno, 35 km from Chania and 100 km from Heraklion. Georgioupoli was founded as Almiropolis in 1893 and renamed Georgioupolis in 1899 in honor of the then High Commissioner of Crete Georg of Greece. To drain the original moorland, numerous eucalyptus trees were planted at the beginning of the 20th century. An impressive avenue of eucalyptus trees therefore welcomes the visitor today and shapes the townscape. The place is in the curve of a bay in front of a peninsula protruding to the west in a river valley lined with eucalyptus trees. The beach of Georgioupoli consists mostly of fine sand, stretches for 10 km to the east. About five kilometers inland is the only natural freshwater lake on Crete, Lake Kournas. The two larger cities of Chania and Rethymno can be reached quickly from Georgioupoli. Vamos and Kalives are also not far from the small town. The place has a small fishing port, which is fed by the approximately one kilometer short river Almiros (dt. ‚The salty‘). Among other things, turtles are native to the water of the river. Georgioupoli is strongly influenced by package tourism. Numerous hotel complexes as well as a tourism-dependent infrastructure with shops, restaurants, real estate agencies and car rental companies were built both in the local area and to the east of it.
