Das Dorf Exo Lakonia (Exo Lakkonia) befindet sich ca. 15 Autominuten westlich der ostkretischen Stadt Agios Nikolaos und bildet mit fünf Weilern die gleichnamige Ortschaft in der Gemeinde Agios Nikolaos. Das Dorf liegt in einer Ebene, die von einer Hügelkette umschlossen – die Berge bilden die Kulisse.
Obwohl Exo Lakonia nur acht Kilometer von Agios Nikolaos und dem Meer entfernt liegt, sucht man in Exo Lakonia Hotels oder Appartementhäuser vergeblich. Die Bevölkerung lebt weitgehend von der Landwirtschaft, insbesondere von der Bewirtschaftung der Olivenhaine. Fast alle Einwohner berichten von Nachkommen, die aus dem Dorf weggezogen sind. Entweder ins nahegelegene Agios Nikolaos oder in eine der kretischen Universitätsstädte Iraklio oder Rethymnon. In Exo Lakonia spielt die Orthodoxe Kirche eine bedeutende Rolle. So gibt es in jedem der Weiler eigene Kirchen und Kapellen.
Der internationale Flughafen von Heraklion liegt 40 Fahrminuten entfernt.

The village of Exo Lakonia (Exo Lakkonia) is located approx. 15 minutes by car to the west of the east Cretan city of Agios Nikolaos and forms with five hamlets the village of the same name in the municipality of Agios Nikolaos. The village lies on a plain surrounded by a chain of hills – the mountains form the backdrop.
Although Exo Lakonia is only eight kilometers from Agios Nikolaos and the sea, you will look in vain for hotels or apartment houses in Exo Lakonia. The population lives largely from agriculture, especially from the cultivation of the olive groves. Almost all residents report of descendants who have moved away from the village. Either to the nearby Agios Nikolaos or to one of the Cretan university cities of Heraklion or Rethymnon. The Orthodox Church plays an important role in Exo Lakonia. There are churches and chapels in each of the hamlets.
Heraklion International Airport is a 40-minute drive away.
