Eleutherna war eine antike griechische Stadt auf der Insel Kreta. Sie lag am nordwestlichen Hang des Ida-Gebirges beim heutigen Dorf Eleftherna und nur 25 km südöstlich der Stadt Rethymno, in der Nähe des Arkadi-Denkmals.
Die Ausgrabungen in Eleutherna begann im Jahr 1985, als die Fakultät für Archäologie und Kunstgeschichte in der Universität von Kreta beschlossen hat, Untersuchungen anzufangen und die aus literarischen Quellen bekannte antike Stadt zu beleuchten. Enthüllt wurde eine Zivilisation, die für Archäologen mit der Bedeutung von Knossos in Heraklion vergleichbar ist. Das neue zeitgenössische Museum von Eleftherna befindet sich an der Stelle der Ausgrabungen, die über 30 Jahre stattfanden.
Eleutherna ist umgeben von Olivenbäumen, Eichen, Lorbeeren und Bächen, die nach Osten und Westen fließen.

Eleutherna was an ancient Greek city on the island of Crete. It was located on the north-west slope of the Ida Mountains near the modern-day village of Eleftherna and only 25 km south-east of the town of Rethymno, near the Arkadi monument.
The excavations in Eleutherna began in 1985 when the Faculty of Archeology and Art History at the University of Crete decided to start research and shed light on the ancient city known from literary sources. What was revealed was a civilization comparable to the importance of Knossos in Heraklion for archaeologists. The new Contemporary Museum of Eleftherna is located on the site of the excavations that took place over 30 years.
Eleutherna is surrounded by olive trees, oaks, laurels and streams flowing east and west.
