Akrotiri ist eine 112 km² große Halbinsel im Nordwesten Kretas, die aus den Ortschaften Aroni, Chordaki, Kounoupidiana, Mouzouras und Sternes besteht.
Akrotiri war ursprünglich rein landwirtschaftlich geprägt, in den niederen Teilen herrschen Garten- und Olivenanbau vor.
Inzwischen wird vor allem im südwestlichen Teil in Küstennähe viel gebaut, die Nähe zur Großstadt Chania machen diesen Teil der Halbinsel zu einem attraktiven Wohngebiet, die Stadt Chania wächst hier über ihre Gemeindegrenze hinaus.
In Strandnähe, wo es sandige Buchten gibt, breitet sich der Tourismus aus.  Neben Wohnbebauung entstehen hier auch ganze „Dörfer“ aus Ferienwohnungen.
Der südwestliche Teil der Halbinsel wird durch ein Plateau gebildet, auf dem der internationale Flughafen Chania liegt.

Akrotiri is a 112 km² peninsula in northwest Crete, which consists of the villages Aroni, Chordaki, Kounoupidiana, Mouzouras and Sternes.
Akrotiri was originally purely agricultural; in the lower parts, gardening and olive cultivation predominate.
In the meantime there is a lot of construction going on, especially in the south-western part near the coast, the proximity to the big city of Chania make this part of the peninsula an attractive residential area, the city of Chania is growing beyond its municipal boundaries.
Tourism spreads near the beach, where there are sandy bays. In addition to residential developments, entire “villages” are being built here from holiday apartments.
The southwestern part of the peninsula is formed by a plateau on which the international airport of Chania is located.
